The Battle of Stalingrad from July 17 1942 to February 2 1943 marked a major turning point in WWII. It was a bloody conflict for soldier and civilian alike, with the conflagration in the ruins of Stalingrad accounting for nearly two million lives. Despite controlling 90% or more of the city, German forces couldn’t quite overcome stubborn Soviet resistance. Meanwhile, the Soviets launched Operation Uranus, a pincer attack that successfully encircled the German 6th Army in Stalingrad. The battle ended with the surrender of 91,000 starving soldiers, including 22 generals. The harshness of this historic battle is captured in a new 1/35 scale Orange Box set that contains four soldiers of the German 6th Army, plus an armored vehicle. The vehicle is the 15cm Sturm-Infanteriegeschütz 33B, a self-propelled heavy infantry gun. A new superstructure containing a sIG33/1 gun was positioned on a StuG.III chassis. The vehicle was designed to demolish buildings with its 15cm gun, so it was ideal for operations in Stalingrad's urban fighting,

The Orange Box kit of the Sturm-Infanteriegeschütz 33B has been upgraded with the addition of Magic Tracks. Modelers will thus find that the kit fits together with ease. When the four figures in combat poses are added, an instant Stalingrad diorama is made possible. The German figures from the ill-fated 6th Army are dressed in winter uniform elements, and they are armed with a variety of weapons as they desperately stave off Soviet attacks. Cyber Hobby 1/35 StuG. III Ausf.C/D with 7.5cm L48 with bonus German Figure set and Magic Tracks Overview

Surprisingly, the Sd.Kfz. 142 Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) was the most widely produced armored fighting vehicle that Germany fielded during WWII. Based on the chassis of the famous Panzer III, the StuG III began life as an infantry support weapon, but by the end of the war it had developed into an effective tank destroyer. One of the earlier variants of the StuG III was the Ausf.C, which was identified by an improved superstructure that eliminated a shot trap near the gunner’s view port. A total of 50 StuG III Ausf.C vehicles, each weighing 20.2 tons and featuring a 7.5cm StuK37 L/24 gun, were produced between May and September of 1941.

Dragon’s latest Orange Box combo set includes a 1/35 scale StuG III Ausf.C, although the kit has a notable difference in that it mounts a 7.5cm StuK40 L/48 main armament instead of the original L/24 gun. This longer-barreled gun was retrofitted to some earlier chassis in order to provide a more effective tank destroying capability. The 1/35 scale tank has also received something of a makeover with the addition of Magic Tracks to add more detailand convenience. The other item included in this economic set is a team of four Panzergrenadiers. The 1/35 scale figures are dressed in winter uniforms as they would have appeared during combat in Eastern Front in 1944/45. This Orange Box selection thus allows modelers to recreate a late-war winter scene. The vehicle and figures are both finely molded and carefully engineered to give a pleasurable build.

When Cyber Hobby released its first 1/700 ship item in the Orange Box series, it proved an instant hit with consumers. Thanks to its low pricing point and its unbeatable value of two kits in the one box, this item was swiftly snapped up by model-makers. Now Cyber Hobby has launched a second 1/700 scale set. The new one features a Russian submarine and an American destroyer, allowing modelers to recreate a post-Cold War scenario. The destroyer is the U.S.S. Cole (DDG-67), perhaps most infamously known as the vessel that was attacked and bombed by Islamic Al-Qaeda extremists while refueling in the Yemeni port of Aden on 12 October 2000. The suicide attack killed 17 sailors and wounded another 39. The U.S.S. Cole is an Arleigh Burke-class Aegis-equipped guided missile destroyer. It was commissioned on 8 June 1996.

The submarine kit in the box, meanwhile, is a Typhoon-class vessel. This Project 941 or Akula type (Akula means “Shark” in Russian) is a Russian nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine that first appeared in the 1980's. It carries 20 SS-N-20 missiles, each of which contain a maximum of ten nuclear warheads. The Typhoon is the largest sub ever built, with maximum displacement of 33,800 tons and a crew of 163. The Typhoon class is among the quietest subs in Russian service, and a total of six vessels were built. Only one remains in active service, however. Both these ship kits are accurately scaled, and are replete with fine detail. They are obviously existing kits from Dragon’s range, but they have received a makeover with the addition of a new set of decals from Cartograf. With two such interesting vessels in the box, this item from Orange Box is an attractive buy!
